Description

In this lesson, students will learn about the different types of editing that can be done to a document. In addition, students will also learn about document formats, functions, and even about creating online help.

Main Aims

  • To develop an understanding of the term: online help.
  • To understand how to format documents and the different types of documents formats available.
  • To understand the purpose of each type of document.
  • To develop an understanding of why we need documents and their main goal.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To be able to create an online help document as well as documents that represent different formats and functions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows SS pictures of different types of documents. Pair Work: SS discuss the documents and write down what they think about each document. Group Work: SS share their ideas and answers.

Introduction (10-15 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of documents

T presents SS with realia. SS work in groups to answer the question on the IWB: "How do you feel about each document?" SS discuss their answers in groups. T nominates SS for feedback. T introduces the different types of documents by eliciting the answers on the WB - using a mind-map.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the topic where students had difficulty in the first stage

T uses OHP to present the presentation. T explains the following topics: - Document Formats - Document Functions - Online Help SS take notes on paper.

Practice (15-20 minutes) • Check students' understanding of the topic

T provides SS with a vocabulary activity where they have to match the words. SS work in pairs to complete the worksheet. SS discuss their answers in pairs. T displays answers on the OHP. T provides SS with a gap-fill handout related to document editing. SS work individually to answer the questions. SS exchange their handouts to check their peer's work. T displays the answers on paper.

Error Correction and Creating Documents (50-60 minutes) • To create documents and correct any errors

T asks SS to work in groups and create different types of documents. SS work in groups to do so. SS share their work with the other group when prompted by the T. T transitions into the activity where SS have to work on their computers. T tells SS to work individually to create different types of documents. SS work on the computer to create the documents. T divides the SS in pairs uses lolly-sticks. T asks SS to share their documents with their partners. SS provide each other with feedback. T monitors and then provides feedback on the errors. T tells SS to work on creating a mini-online help page. T monitors and writes down any errors made. SS work individually and then share their online help pages with their peers. Peer-review is conducted. T uses the IWB to display any errors that were made during the process. SS discuss the errors in groups before getting feedback from the T.
