Description

In this lesson, students will learn Can / Can't possibilit and ability. The topic is travelling and transportation. They will watch a video about airport and then talk about it. They'll read a travel forum and do some controlled exercises. Students will also have a listening exercise. Finally, they will work in pairs asking and answering Can / Can't activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Can / Can't possibilit and ability in the context of Travelling

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about with the things you can do in transport system in Hong Kong in the context of travelling in Hong Kong.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will watch a video about Atatürk Airport and I'll ask them ' What can you / can't you do with 100 TL at Atatürk Airport? I'll write the question on the board and let them think and share their ideas.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will work in pairs to talk about what they do when they have a long wait for a bus, plane, etc. Then, Through a text about Hong Kong Airport, students will focus on the target language.

Highlighting (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I'll ask some Can/ Can't questions to the students about the text. After eliciting the answers, I'll write one of them to the board and read the Grammar Box which explains the meaning and the usage of the target language.

Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will do the gap-filling exercise and then listen and check the answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will work in pairs and listen to Mei Ling talking about things you ca and can't do in Hong Kong. They will tick and cross the things with their partners.

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Teacher will give them another handout and students will go around and ask the question written to each other. Then teacher will elicit the answers.
