Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in prepositions in the context of things used in daily life.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening practice to use prepositions in sentences.

Procedure

Warmer (5-6 minutes) • To check students previous knowledge and to drill vocabulary.

Teacher displays pictures of words and questions students: What is it? Teacher encourages the students to answer the questions in complete sentences. Teacher displays a picture of flower and flowers and asks pupils : What is different in the pictures? Teacher practices and reviews one and many (adding s) . Teacher displays a few more pictures and asks students to say the words - For example - duck ducks,table tables , kite kites.

Listening Practice - Pencil Activity (4-5 minutes) • To practice listening to prepositions in sentences.

Teacher divides the class into 4 groups. Teacher takes a pencil and models the activity. Teacher says: Put the pencil on the table. Teacher does the action for the same. Teacher then instructs students to take their pencil. Teacher says sentences using different prepositions - on, in, under, between, in front of, behind. Teacher checks if all students are doing the correct actions. Points are rewarded if all the team members follow the instructions.

Controlled Speaking Practice (5-7 minutes) • To practice speaking fluently and accurately using prepositions in sentences.

Teacher takes an object and places it in different places and questions students: Where is the pouch? Teacher places objects in different places and questions students as a class, in groups and individually. Teacher drills the sentences and checks students' pronunciation and sentence structure. Immediate error correction is done if required. Teacher then nominates a student to do the same and other students say where the object is.

Less Controlled Speaking Practice (9-10 minutes) • To practice the target language and check students' understanding of prepositions.

Pair Work - Teacher models the activity. Teacher nominates a student. Teacher takes the student's bag and a flashcard. Teacher then puts the flashcard of an apple in the the bag and questions the student - Where is the apple? The student answers the question - The apple is in the bag. Teacher places the apple in different places and questions the student. Teacher gives the bag and the flashcard to the student. Teacher asks him/her to place the apple wherever she or he pleases and questions the teacher. Teacher responds to the question based on where the apple is placed. ICQs - Are you going to work alone? No Are you going to ask questions? Yes Are you going to use your bag and the flashcard? Yes Teacher divides the students in pairs, gives each pair a flash card and instructs them to do the same. Teacher then gives each pair another flashcard and instructs them to place the flashcards in different places and ask questions to each other. Teacher monitors and immediate error correction is done. Common errors are noted down and delayed error correction is done once the students have had enough practice with the flashcards and the bag.

Controlled Writing Practice (7-8 minutes) • To check Ss understanding of prepositions.

1.Teacher shows students a HO and sets instructions - Match the prepositions to the pictures. Whole Class Feedback: Once students complete the task, teacher nominates students to come up to WB and complete the HO stuck on the WB. 2. Teacher then displays another HO and sets instructions. Teacher instructs students to look at the picture and choose the correct preposition. Whole Class Feedback: Once students complete the task, teacher nominates students to come up to WB and complete the HO stuck on the WB.

Listening Practice (9-10 minutes) • To improve and practice the target language. To check students' understanding of prepositions.

Students are divided into 4 groups. Teacher distributes the course book and flashcards. Teacher sets instructions: Put the apple on the table. Students follow the teacher's instructions and place the apple on the table. Teacher sets different instructions and monitors if students have followed the instructions. If all the members of the group have placed the objects in the correct place, that group is rewarded with points. Immediate error correction is done if required.

Lesson Review and Activity (8-10 minutes) • To practice target language and vocabulary. To review and check student's understanding.

Group Activities Game 1: Simon Says: Teacher sets instructions. Students are divided in groups. Teacher sets a task and the group that completes the task first and accurately is rewarded with points. Teacher models the instructions. Simon says - Put the yellow pencil on the floor. Are you going to work alone? No Are you going to search for things? Yes Game 2: Teacher sets instructions. A student from each group is nominated. Teacher says a word. Students are to run to the board and write the word. The student who writes the word first and accurately is rewarded with points.

Less Controlled Speaking Practice (6-7 minutes) • To clarify vocabulary and target language in the context of preferences.

(If time permits) Teacher displays pictures of different animals. Teacher says: I like horses. Teacher questions Ss; Do you like horses? What's your favourite animal? Teacher displays pictures of different sports. Teacher says: I like swimming. Do you like swimming? What is your favourite sport? Teacher checks student's vocabulary and encourages Ss to ask their partners about their favourite colours, songs and food.
