Description

In this lesson, students practice reading skills through a text about survival. The lesson starts with introducing some vocabulary through pictures and discussion questions within the context. This is followed by pair work reading to identify the gist and details, guess the meaning of unknown words and summarize the text. Finally, they found an NGO and prepare posters to present them as a speaking activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about survival of endangered species

  • To identify main ideas, to find specific information, to predict the meaning of words, to summarize.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks the question "What are the survival skills to keep you alive in an emergency or in the wilderness?" and have a short class discussion.

Pre-Readin (18-20 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T shows a PPT on which words from the text are introduced by pictures and questions related to the context. Students will share their ideas with the class.

While-Reading #1 (17-20 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Ss work in pairs. T gives the text cut into paragraphs and stripes of paper the research questions are written. Ss match the research questions with the paragraphs and find the answers of the qs. T gives class feedback.

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

Ss work in pairs. They will identify the synonyms in close reading exercise in the book. Then they will match the definitions with three words in paragraph 3 by guessing their meanings from the context. T gives class feedback.

While-Reading #3 (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

Ss work in pairs. T hands out worksheets, a paragraph with gaps which is a summary of the text. Ss complete it. Pairs check their answers with other pairs. T will give class feedback.

Post-Reading (20-25 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss work in groups of 4. Groups will found an environmental organization. They will find the purpose, the name, the logo and their first project. They will prepare a poster to introduce their organization and present it to the class.
