Description

In this lesson the students will learn how to meet people and ask them about their nationalities

Materials

Abc Elementary student's book ( Chris Redstone and Gillie Cunningham, face to face)
Abc cards
Abc life stories

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for meeting new people in the context of countries and nationalities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of 'To be' verbs and 'wh' questions in the context of asking people about their countries and nationalities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

put a picture showing a woman who wants to shake a hand on the board. ask students some questions to discuss in pairs: do you know this woman? what is she saying? is she from Turkey? does she know you? does she want to get to know you?

Exposure (8-12 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

put the pictures of countries flags on the walls while the name of countries are written on the board. Put the students in groups and ask them to match the flags with it's country name. then check the answers in class and correct them if necessary.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

point to the picture of the woman and ask is she from turkey? where is she from? so she is ......

Clarification (4-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

draw pictures of some people together and a man and ask students where is he/are they from? then point to Brazil after they answered ask is he Brazilian/Chinese...? and ask same questions about other nationalities and countries...

Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

students will do tasks 3b, 4 and 5 in the course book

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

students will practice conversations 1,2 and 3 in pairs ( they are able to change the names or nationalities )then they will do the same in class

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

give each students one card with a country and a name written on it and ask students to walk around the class and meet new people.
