Travel, will and be going to
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students learn about will and be going to through guided discovery by asking concept check questions based on listening to an audio about traveş. The lesson starts with discussion about being globetrotter. This is followed by listen and then speaking activity where students practice speaking by using will and to be going to with controlled-way.

Main Aims

  • To provide listening
  • To (a) help Ss practise listening for gist and specific information of people talking about travelling (b) learn new vocabulary in relation to travel.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To (a) introduce “will” and “ to be going to” particularly by focusing on their different usages (b) practice speaking about plans and intentions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. T write the word “ globetrotter” on the board and then T hands out some postcards from different countries to Ss. 2. T first pairs Ss and asks them guess “What globetrotter means?” for one minute. 3. After that, students talk to their partners about their ideas. 4. T listens to Ss describing the word.

Pre-teach Vocabulary (6-10 minutes) • Talking about their experiences with the travel -Having students ready for listening the track

1. T introduces a worksheet including questions for Ss to discuss for two minutes. Then, Ss will talk about their partners related to the questions. 2. For pre-teach vocabulary for listening, T writes the unknown ( assumed) words on the board and the definitions, then asks Ss to match them in two minutes with their partners. - These are the words: survey, passenger, complimentary, voucher, duty free, interview.

While-Listening (11-15 minutes) • Answering the two questions and filling the chart accordingly -Discovering the language by giving answers to these two questions: “what they usually do?” and “what they are doing?”

3. For the gist listening, Ss listen to two travellers and answer the only one question “ What does the interview give to each traveller?”

While-Listening 2 (16-20 minutes) • to get specific information

4. Ss fill in the chart answering five question that leads them get specific information while listening 5. Ss check their notes with the partner. 6. Ss discover how to answer the questions in present simple and present continuous. 7. T pairs ss up to underline the present tense and present continuous forms. 8. Ss ask and answer the questions for few minutes.

Post-Listening, grammar: will and be going to (20-30 minutes) • to provide ss new grammar structure

T presents the language with some real situations such as; - Being at the restaurant ( T is the waitress and one student is a customer. After giving the menu, T asks s “ What would you like to eat?” that is for “will” usage. T waits for he right answer. “ I will get this and that, please?” - Being at the clothes shop( T is the shop assitant, one of the Ss is the costumer. T ask “ which one would you like to buy? ? This one or that one? . The student is supposed to say “I will take this one please? - Being on the phone. ( T talks to her friend on the phone. Her friend invites her outside, but she says “ sorry but ı have already made my plan. I am going to watch film at home. Thank you fo calling.” This is for “ be going to”.

Speaking : Plans and intentions (30-35 minutes) • to help students practice speaking

T hand out two travellers’ information to six students, three of whom will be Zhi Peng and three of whom will be Tyler. The other six students like the interviewer,Hong Li will be given the questions and three of them will ask Zhi Peng , the other three will ask Tyler.

Speaking 2: (36-45 minutes) • Students work in first pair and then in groups to communicate with one another

T hangs six situations on different aspects of the walls in the classroom. Students will be handed out a piece of paper on which is written the numbers 1-6. Teacher pairs Ss and ask them go and write their own decisions for each situations. It takes 6- 7 minutes. T then groups Ss four to discuss about their decisions.
