WRITING A LETTER/E-MAIL
LEARNERS OF C1/C2 Level level
By the end of the session the trainees will have discussed formal and informal email writing, they will have clarified the stages of a writing skills lesson. They will produce a piece of writing. Finally using correction codes they will have corrected a piece of writing.
They may learn some useful vocabulary related to compaints
Procedure (46-55 minutes)
Write the word WRITING on board .Ask them WHY we are writing(to inform,to suggest ,to advise etc)and to name different kinds of writings.(emails,letters,notices,announcements,brochures ,reviews etc) What is important when writing ? organise the piece correctly,answering the question asked ,use the right language,grammar and vocabulary. WRITE ON BOARD:register(degree of formality),content/taskcompletion,organisation,grammar and vocabulary.
1.Hand out photocopies of two different letters .Students have to quickly recognise if it is formal or informal. 2.Give them another photocopy with mixed expressions of formal and informal language.They have to work in pairs and compare answers with classmates. 3.Divide the class into 2 teams and tell them to match the formal to informal expressions . The expressions are written on cards (prepared at home).Each team gets 16 cards
Greeting ,Reason for writing, Body of the letter-email ,Ending Write these words on board but in different order .They have to reorder them . After they reorder them,hand out phoocopies with the words in correct order and some useful expressions and tell them to match the expressions to the words. Compare answers Greeting:Dear Sir/Madam Reason for writing I am writing to you about Body of language :Firstly,secondly, Ending:Please contact me to the above address
Writeon board:To:------------------------- From:-------------------------- Subject---------------------- Give them the following e-mail to write about. You bought a very expensive mobile phone online.When it arrived ,you found out that it was faulty.Write a letter to the company and ask for a refund(your money back). Divide the class into 2 teams.The first team will write the intoduction of a letter and the first paragraph.(The reason for writing and describe the problem analytically )The second team will write the second paragraph(how you felt as soon as you saw the product,ask for a refund) and the conclusion.
Show them a corrected writing full of mistakes underlined with a red pen.Ask them if it is right to correct like that.No,because students get really disappointed.Tell them to use green or old pens.Make a few comments about the Hand out photocopies with correction codes.Tell them to have a look and talk about them.Give them an exercise on correction codes and ask them to find the answers using the correction codes.
