Description

In this lesson, Ss will read a text titled "How children get what they want". The topic of the text is what technique is used by the children to make their parents do what they want them to do. As the lead-in we will have a discussion on Ss' own experiences about children wanting something from their parents, what parents can teach their children and what parents can learn from their children. Then they will be given one question as task and the handouts. After reading the text we will discuss about the answer.

Main Aims

  • To practice reading skills through reading for understanding the gist.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Ss will try to understand the lexis throughout the context.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-10 minutes) • Get the Ss interested in the topic, establish a link between the topic of the text and Ss lives and experiences.

Ss will answer below questions: 1. Remember when you were children. Did your parents do everything you wanted? 2. How did you make them do what you want? 3. Do you have a little brother or sister or a niece? How do they want things from their parents? 4. Do you think parents can teach their children? What can they teach their children? 5. Do you think parents can learn from their children? What they can learn from their children?

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • Predict the topic from the title and give the Ss the task before they start reading the text

Ss will be given the handouts. Then Ss will try to guess the gist of the text by reading the title only. Then I will write the question: "What does the writer think parents can learn from their children?" on the WB. Give instructions and ask ICQs.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-15 minutes) • Ss will focus on meaning

Ss will read the text once and will try to answer the question "What does the writer think parents can learn from their children? Do you agree?" Ss will have 7 minutes to read the text.

Post-Reading/Listening (15-15 minutes) • Ss will match the words in the text and their explanations

Ss will do exercise 3 where they will match the words that are written in italic in the text with five explanation phrases. Then they will give feedback to the class. I will give them 7 minutes to work in pairs.
