Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Present continuous and present simple in the context of Work and holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about holiday in the context of Nigel's life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Lead in with the video: Ask ss, "what is he doing in the video?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44DCWslbsNM -Elicit some answers and ask them, do you think he does these actions every day? (locking door 3 times, turning off lights 3 times, using new soap every day) When someone does something everyday it's called = routine (elicit and drill word afterwards)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- Refer students back to the picture of Nigel from yesterday's class (P 97). Ask ss what he is doing in the picture and let them talk about it for a minute or two. (HO1) - WC FB and tell them to unfold page and fill the gaps alone. (simple present) - Check in pairs and after that listen to 13.5 for answer. - Ask class, does Nigel do these things every day or is he doing them right now? (elicit every day, usual)

Highlighting (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-Give students HO 2 with gist questions about Nigel on Holiday (in present continuous). -Give the students some time to read it and answer it individually. Then compare in PW, then WC FB. - Tell students to unfold the text and answer the questions in pair. WC FB and HO AK

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- Instruct guided discovery- work in pairs. Handout the guided discovery and tell students to not unfold the papers. -When they are finished, instruct to work in groups. -WC FB and then HO AK - Drill model sentence on WB (Postitive, negative and question form)

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- Instruct HO4, focus attention on the examples in number 1. Ask 'Which verb means true every day, but not now? (lives)' 'which verb means now? (is staying) = verb-ing. - tell ss to work in pairs and fill gaps. -Fast WC FB with 2 examples and tell students to unfold page

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Instruct students to find a picture in their mobile phones from a holiday, but it must be of a friend, family member or someone they know. They must write about their friend and tell the story to their partner. -WC FB ss tell to class about partner's photo. Contrasting present simple and present continuous.
