Practicing Present Perfect and Past Simple
Intermediate B1 level

Description

In this lesson, after revising the usage and the rules of Present Perfect and Simple Past Tenses, students will have time to practice with the teacher and their peers. Ss will read a paragraph about Toby Ord's achievement and complete his story using the correct form of the given words. Afterwards teacher will elicit the answers and correct the mistakes. After that, Ss will listen to five everyday conversations and do the matching exercise. Another practice is completing the sentences using the words in the box with their correct forms. This will be a pair work activity. Another activity will be pronunciation. Ss will listen to the first conversation from the everyday conversations and do the exercise. Ss will practise a few phrases and practise reading an audio script with a partner. Last activity will be pair work and Ss will ask and answer to each other using the given ideas. Then the teacher will listen to the pairs and correct the mistakes. At the end, teacher will ask Ss if there is anything that they would like to ask.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will ask a few questions to the Ss. ' Have you ever won a medal?' ' Has anyone collected money for a charity? Teacher will elicit the answers and correct the mistakes.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through gap filling/listening

Ss will read the paragraph and complete the sentences using the words in brackets. Teacher will elicit the answers and correct the mistakes. Ss will listen to everyday converstaions and do the matching exercises.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Teacher asks Ss what kind of everyday language we use. Teacher may give an example: ' I have gained 3 kilos since September. ' and the asks to one of the students: ' How about you, Aslı? '

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss will work in pairs to complete the sentences about everyday conversations. Then Ss will listen to a conversation and phrases to focus on the pronunciation. Final activity is pair work , ask and answer questions to each other. They will talk about what kind of activities have they done and haven't done.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Teacher will listen to each pair and correct the mistakes. Sometimes teacher will guide the Ss to correct their own mistakes.
