Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson SS will have practiced reading for gist and for specific information in the context of Girls' night out.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will have practiced speaking for fluency as a production activity in the context of Girls' night out.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Focus ss' attention on the PowerPoint pictures to get the ss engaged. T: "Look at these pictures and tell me what are these women doing?"

Pre-teach Vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • Helping ss with difficult words so they understand the reading better.

Use ECDW technique to pre-teach difficult vocabulary. Sweater: show a picture Macho: Dangerous: something that is not safe Fantastic: Traditional: Literature: written books

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • Provide ss with language to prepare them for the reading

- Give SS a task to complete with go, have, or get. - T: Ask SS to fill in the boxes that are on top of the pics with: go, have or get. - T demonstrates the first one or two for/with the SS, then SS complete the task alone. - ICQ: Are you going to match? (yes) Are you working in alone? (yes) - T asks SS to check their answers in pairs. - T gives SS answer key.

Reading for gist (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist reading task

- T gives the ss the reading text and asks them to look at the text and pictures quickly: "what is this text about?" - ICQ: (It's a report about what women do when they go out together in the evening).

Reading for Specific Information (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with specific information reading task

- T chests task and tells SS that they are going to read the question and then match them with the reading passage. T points at each sentence and the numbered parts in the text showing saying: " Read quickly and find the part that matches each question. - T demonstrates the first one for the SS. - ICQ: Are you going to read every word? (yes) Are you going to match? (yes) - T hands the questions and gives the SS 1 minute to read them. - T asks SS to check their answers in pairs. - T provides answer.

Post-Reading - Speaking (productive skills) (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned through a speaking task.

- T shows the SS task and says: "you are going to work in pairs" SS assigns Ss A and Ss B. - T says Ss A will ask Ss B about the missing item on their sheet and then mark yes or no. - T demonstrates with one of the Ss: "B did Sabina wear a dress?" - B: "No, she didn't" - ICQ: Are you going to work in pairs? (yes) Are you going to write anything? (yes) - Ss check their answers ink groups. - T provides answer key.
