Description

In this lesson students will be discovering, reviewing and practising some of collocations related to healthy habits with their meaning, form and pronunciation. They do an interview task at the end of it.

Main Aims

  • To provide students with clarification / review and practice of healthy habits collocations in the context of living long.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with writing practice (notetaking) as they interview each other
  • To provide the students with practice in speaking for fluency

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start the lesson coughing. "Say I am coughing a lot. I think I should quit smoking to live long. Do you think it is a healthy habit?" Write healthy habits on the board. Pair them up and want them to brainstorm/think as many words as they can related to it. Set 1 minute. Elicit their answers on the board.

Exposure & Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation / To draw students' attention to the target language

Say "There are a lot of good habits and bad habits. If you have good habits you live ......., If you have bad habits, you....." Then tell them there are some sentences from the text about living long and they are going to underline all the habits in the sentences. Set 1 minute. Ask ICQs. Give them the sheets. Ask them to check their answers in pairs before feedback. Elicit the answers and stick the collocations to the board.

Clarification (13-14 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Open the Slide. Tell them they are going to see some photos and we are going to talk together. Clarify the meaning through visuals, referring back to the text, and using CCQs. For Form, tell them they are going to see a table. There will be different parts of speech like verb, adjectivei adverb and they are going to fill in the charts using the words in the box. Set 2 minutes. Get them into pairs and tell them to check together. Then call all of them to the board. Get them in line in a circle. They will come one after another and stick the correct part of speech next to the collocation on the board. Pronunciation: Using the cards on the board, Model the sound and get them to drill first chorally then individually.

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Tell them they will read some ideas of some doctors and scientists. They are going to fill in the gaps using the collocations in the handout. Set 3 minutes. Ask some ICQs. After they finish get them to do peercheck. Want them to come to the board and write the collocations.

Semi-Controlled & Freer Practice (13-14 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice / To provide students with free practice of the target language

Step 1: Get the into pairs and tell they are going to interview each other. In the first part they will mark yes or no, In the second part of the interview they will make notes of the answers. Ask ICQs. Set 4 minutes. Monitor them and check if everything is OK. Step 2: Tell them to complete the form according to their friends' answers. Then they will decide if they have a healthy life or not. Set 2 minutes. Ask ICQs and tell them to unfold the form. Step 3: Tell them to come together again. Tell them to share their report with each other and give some advice. Ask ICQs and set 2 minutes. Elicit some of the results of the reports through WCF. Finish off the lesson by error correction.
