Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a discussion in the context of work

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information in the context of work

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

First, Ss will number the work-related items in order of their importance. They will work together and discuss with each other to do so.

Exposure (7-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Working in pairs they will match the words which are related to work with their definitions. Following this, they will listen to their pronunciation and repeat.

Useful Language (12-15 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Giving them some handouts about work areas I will ask questions "Which industry does a chef, cook, waiter work in?", "Which industry does a model and fashion designer work in?", "What types of jobs are there in the entertainment industry?", "Which work area is good for you? Why?".

Listening and Highlighting (7-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss will listen to ex.1A (p22) and complete the gaps. Then I will highlight the words on the board eliciting answers from them such as "Which phrases are positive?", "Which are negative?" "Which is not positive or negative?".

Feedback and Error Correction (10-15 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

In this stage Ss will do the tasks Ex: 2A and 3A (p20) and they will compare their answers with each other. I will give them feedback considering their speech. As an additional stage when there is enough time Ss will read a short text from BBC programme and try to guess the meaning of highlighted words in it. (p.24)
