Main Aims

  • To provide students with practice in reading for gist and detailed information in the context of visiting places in London

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with practice in speaking for fluency in the context of visiting places in different seasons

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students by referencing to the listening from the previous lesson

Ask sts the following questions about the listening from the previous lesson. -Do you remember the weather in London? -How is it like in winter? In summer? Talk about it as a whole class. If students don't give enough answers, nominate them.

Pre-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text by showing them photos of the places seen in the text

Show sts the what to do in London ppt. Ask them questions about the pictures and try to elicit the words ice-skating, museum, open-air. When the ppt is over, ask students: which one would you like to go? Why?

While-Reading #1 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist task by matching the titles to the paragraphs

Give the sts the text. Tell them: -Read the text and match the titles with the paragraphs. You have 5 mins. When students finish reading, have them do pair check. Then, get answers from students.

While-Reading #2 (19-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks in the context of activities in London in different weathers

Before giving the students "where can you" exercise, give them these instructions: -Read the text again and write SH, SK or HH in the small boxes in 10 minutes(write Somerset House, South Kensington and Hampstead Heath on the board and underline the initials to make students realise what they are about). After 10 minutes, use pair check and nominate students to give the answers. When they finish, give them the comprehension questions and tell them to answer the questions with their partners in 4 mins. When the time's up, get answers from students.

Post-Reading (12-14 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned by talking about which they would prefer and about their hometown

Give these instructions to the students and give the speaking production sheet: -You are going to talk about these questions in groups. You have 5 mins to prepare short notes. After 5 mins, make groups of three and give them 4 mins to talk. Note down if you see major problems and give feedback at the end of the lesson.
