Description

In this session, students will practice speaking skill in the context of a game. They will be using different combinations of Past Simple and Past Continuous.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of a game.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of Past Simple and Past Continuous

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To review the combinations of the past simple and past continuous tenses

1. Draw a timetable on the board and ask Ss to write one sentence. a) Past Continuous- Past Simple ----------X 2. Ask two Ss to read their sentences. 3. Draw three timelines showing three different combinations of Past Simple and Past Continuous. Also provide a context with each timeline. a) Past Continuous- Past Simple (a party/an old friend) b) Past Continuous- Past Continuous (a restaurant/ a partner) c) Past Simple- Past Simple (school/ a best friend) 4. Ask Ss to read their sentences to their partner. 5. Feedback- Check one or two sentences.

Pre-Task (10-15 minutes) • To present the Game

1. Icebreaker- play Pink Panther (music) and start playing as a detective looking for a thief. Suspect 2. Meaning- Use the following context: a) Your phone is stolen in the office. There are two people. CCQ a) Do we know he has stolen the phone? No b) Is it possible that he has stolen the phone? Yes 3. Pronunciation- Choral and Individual drills. 4. Form- Write “suspect” on the board and show the syllables, stress and part of speech. Alibi 5. Meaning- use two contexts to explain the meaning of "Alibi” a) You cannot attend an exam session (alibi: I was sick). b) You are late to the class (alibi: there was an accident). CCQ: Is it an excuse for something bad or good? 6. Pronunciation- drill (choral and individual). 7. Form- write "alibi" on the board and show the syllables, stress and part of speech. 8. Give HO1 to Ss and explain the story. 9. Do as instructed in HO 2. 10. Give HO 3 to Ss. 11. Feedback- Check if everyone is ready. If not, give some more time. 12. Give 5-7 minutes to Ss to prepare.

Speaking Task (15-20 minutes) • To practice past simple and past continuous tesnses in the context of a game.

1. Take HO 3 from the suspects. The police should have their handouts. 2. Ss start the interviews. (some suspenseful music is on) 3. During the task, T closely observes them and takes notes on their common mistakes (10 mins). 4. When the task finishes, T writes the mistakes on the board. 5. Ss correct the mistakes.
