Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation ( advantages and dis-advantages) in the context of E-Shopping

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start by asking the Ss what they learned in the previous lessons..then hang the pictures of the shopping malls, supermarket, vegetable market.Discuss that these are all different shopping experiences...Elicit: .but, now in modern day technology people experience new......(pausing and having them finish the sentence with their ideas).

To pre-teach vocabulary (4-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of new vocabulary

To elicit, check meaning, drill and then write the written form of the following vocabulary words from the text:" connoisseurs, memorabilia" First, I will show pictures to elicit both words, and I will ask CCQ's, then I say the word and drill the Ss,Finally, I write the word on the board marking parts of speech and pronunciation.

Scan reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pass out handouts of page 90. Then, show Ss the picture of the on-line shopping website. Tell the Ss to look at ex.1, read the sentences quickly and find which link you would click. Tell the students that everyone does this activity individually. In pairs, the Ss discuss these answers. Choose a Ss to write the answers on the board.

While-Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, tasks

Pass handouts of descriptions of three online stores (pg.133).They quickly read the text and match them to the stores. Have them discuss their answers with their partners . Then re-group by dividing the class into 3 groups. Give them a handout ex.3, pg.90 , then give them instructions that they will have a race between the groups, they must read the descriptions again and match them with the stores. First team to finish with correct answers wins the race. Whole class feedback

Post-Reading/Semi free activity (8-10 minutes) • To combine reading skills with speaking

I ask the Ss : Do you shop online? Why??Why not? Whats an advantage, whats a disadvantage? As they start speaking...Tell them to save their thoughts to write them in a handout...have them discuss in groups. Finally, whole class feedback.
