In this lesson, Ss are going to explore/rethink reported speech. They are going to guide themselves through grammar. They will also do listening and speaking activities.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of reported speech in the context of gossip

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversaiton in the context of information
  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about gossip


Warmer/Lead-in (3-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T: "I want you to find the topic for our class today." -T chooses a student and whispers the word to his/her ear. T draws six lines on the board and creates a hangman. - T "You are going to tell your friend letters. Try to guess our topic for today." "Gossip." Tasks the meaning of gossip to the sts"gossip (v,n) to talk about other people, especially their private life" and says "it is our topic today." -T thanks the S. - T: " Please write down this link on your phones. Write your names on the next page. I prepared a survey for you. Let's answer them together."

Exposure (5-12 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- T shows pictures of three women and a man. "This is Rosemary, Iris, Jack, and Emma. You are going to listen to a conversation between Rosemary and Iris. Listen, what has happened to Jack and Emma?" - Track starts. T waits for the answers. - T " Now open your books. Page 94, Exercise B. We are going to listen to Rosemary and Iris again. Look at the questions and answer the questions." - T opens the track. Sts finishes the exercise. T "Check your answers with your partners please." Sts check their answers. T "Let's look at them together." T asks the questions to sts. - T "So, do we know what really happened between Jack and Emma?" Sts "No, we don't" T " Now we will listen to the real conversation between Jack and Emma and decide was Rosemary right about everything?" Sts listen. We learn the real issue. T asks sts "So what happened between Jack and Emma? Was Rosemary correct?" Sts answer.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- T "Let's look at some sentences on the board. On the left you see what Emma said, on the right, you see what Rosemary and Iris said. With your partner, underline the words that are different from the original sentences." - T "Okay, let's look at the differences. Sentence 1,?" Sts answer. "Very good. Sentence 2?" Sts answer. "Good job. Sentence 3?" Sts answer. - T "Awesome, guys! So can anyone tell me how did we change the sentences?" T waits for an answer. If they answer, awesome. If they don't "Hmm... We need more practice, okay then. Let's look at some rules about reported speech."

Clarification (2-3 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- T "Okay guys, before we go to the details let's do some pronunciation. Repeat after me." --> come back. she wouldn't come back. him that she wouldn't come back. Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-T "Let's make 3-4 groups." T gives the pouch to students and they choose their groups. -T chests the envelope. "Okay, in this envelope you have instructions. Read them carefully." T gives each group one envelope. Hello, my lovely students, I have important information about reported speech. Read the information about reported speech and answer the questions with your group. - T gives worksheets to groups. - T observes the groups. T answers any questions that sts have during the exercise. - T warns sts about the time for them to finish the exercise. - T collects the finished exercises. T gives different papers to each group. - T "Alright, I will show you the answer key. Please check your friends' exercises and correct if there is any mistake." - Sts look at the board and correct the answers. -T "Do you have any questions about the exercises?" If yes T elaborates more if not T starts the free exercise.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-T gives groups a piece of paper. "Okay guys, with your group write 5 sentences using reported speech. For example: "Henri had told me that Masako wanted a cup of coffee with two sugars”. Try to write long and complicated sentences. When you finish raise your hands. T asks ICQs. How many sentences are you writing? -5. Are you writing short and easy sentences? -No, long and complicated. Are you writing alone? -No, with our group. Are you writing direct speech or reported speech? -Reported speech." - T corrects the grammar mistakes. If sts are finished, T collects the questions. - After groups finish T "Okay guys, please leave a chair empty in your group. We are going to play Chinese Whispers. I will tell a sentence to your ear and you have to say that sentence to your friend. I will not repeat that sentence. Sentences are in reported speech. The last person has to say it in direct speech. For example, I whisper "Tuğba said she was going to Korea next August." How can we turn this sentence to a direct speech? - Tuğba is going to Korea next August. If the sentence is correct you get a point. when the last person says the sentence, they move to the empty chair and we change the last person." - Sts start the game. T observes gives feedback when necessary.
