Vocabulary (Past time phrases)
Elementary level

Description

Students already learnt how to set up sentences in the past tense in the last 4 lessons. Here they'll learn the past time phrases and after this lesson, hopefully, they'll be able to use them.

Materials

Abc Fill the blanks/table with given time phrases

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of past time phrases.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a past time in the context of "when did you last....."

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To warm the students up, I will ask them some questions. "Yesterday, I woke up at 9 o'clock. I wore my clothes and came to British Side. In the afternoon, I had lunch with my friend and it was really yummy. Then we went back to the British Side. What did you do yesterday afternoon?"

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Here they will get an exercise in which they're gonna fill the blanks with time phrases. I'll ask them to do it individually first and then I will group them. I've prepared "fortune teller" game. I wrote the answers inside of fortune teller. The students will receive it to see their answers. Meanwhile, I'll write the blanks on the board. After they check their mistakes, they should come in front of the board and write the answers on the blanks one by one. For every answer they write, I'll do the drilling chorally and if necessary, individually.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will draw the table which is given in the exercise sheet. First I will give them instructions about the exercise. I want them to be active so I'll make two groups or depending on the number of students I can pair them. I'll put the answers that I printed, on the board and they will talk to their partners about the right answer. I'll give them 2 minutes. Then they will come and tack the answers on the correct line.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students need to read the ten given questions by themselves for a few minutes. Then, I'll pair them so they can write 2 more questions starting with "When did you last..........?". I'll give them an example like: "When did you last read a book?" Afterwards, I'll ask which questions did they write as a pair. If they did some mistakes, we will fix it together.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will pair them with different partners. They will ask their partner the questions which are given(including their questions). They will write their partner's answers down. Then I will ask them what their partner said.
