Description

In this lesson, students will learn simple past tense (affirmative sentence with regular verb, negative and question forms with "did") through guided discovery. In lead-in part, Michael Jackson's life will be a revision of previous part of past simple. With reading part and some examples, students will get awareness of new form. First, they will be given regular verbs then question and negative sentences. Students will have controlled practices in both groups, Finally, they will have free practice as a role-play which they ask questions to each other as if they were interviewers.

Main Aims

  • To provide proper guidance for Simple Past (regular verb, question and negative forms) "watched", "What did you do?" ...by reading about Oprah Winfrey and listening/ watching and interview with michael Jackson

Subsidiary Aims

  • Reading about Oprah Winfrey is at first to answer basic questions which help students revise their knowledge about simple past, then it is a part of controlled practice. It contains gap-filling with regular verbs "earned, interviewed, started..." Listening part is mostly used to check Ss' answers about Simple Past

Procedure

Stage 1 (Lead-in) (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Show powerpoint about Michael Jackson to revise Ss' knowledge about Simple Past - Ask Ss whether they know anything else about Michael Jackson or not (if needed, lead them to P/W)

Stage 2 (Pre-teach Vocab) (6-7 minutes) • To provide needed phrases to deal with reading texts

- Watch Oprah Winfrey's interview with Michael Jackson -Ask "who are they? what are they doing? - Pre-teach Ss "interview, coal mine, scholarship, move, earn, charity" by eliciting and following CCQs and drilling

Stage 3 (Reading - Listening) (5-6 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language (Simple Past)

- Ask Ss to read the part about Oprah Winfrey's childhood also T plays the track (6.2) to set the time (ex 3 pg 46) and answer the questions in 2 min - T monitors and takes notes for delayed F/B - When they finish, T groups them in 3, and they check their answers with their group in 1 min - Put the answers behind the smard board, choose one student in each group to run and check the answer, then return their group and dictate the answer. Dictation F/B - T gives delayed F/B

Stage 4 Presenting grammar- I and controlled practice (8-10 minutes) • to provide clear information about regular verbs

- T shows the video and asks: "What did we do with that video?" -Elicits "We watched an interview 5 min ago". Meaning: "Is this action past or present?" "What did we use to show past?" "watch-ed" CCQs: "Which TV series did you watch yesterday?" -Backchain drill and write the sentence on the board. - T directs Ss to ex 4, T wants Ss to use the verbs "move, study, talk.." in past form with tennis game - After checking verbs' past form, Ss complete Oprah Winfrey's success part (pg 47) with them ( as a controlled exercise) - T monitors. When they finish, they have peer check. O/C F/B

Stage 5 Presenting Grammar-II (8-10 minutes) • to clarify question and negative forms of Past Simple and to do controlled practice

-T underlines the sentences in the exercise 4 "we didn't have much money." "what did I do?" and elicits the sentences' form whether they are positive, negative or question? and writes them on the board. -T elicits the difference between "We watched an interview 5 min ago" and "What did I do?" emphasizes "did" - True Sentence Drilling "on Monday" ....." What did you do on Monday?" "on Tuesday"...."What did you do on Tuesday?" "Which film"......."Which film did you watch on Tuesday?" -T clears the form and directs Ss to ex 6 to complete it in 2 min (another controlled ex). T monitors and take notes for delayed feedback - After peer check, T plays the track 6.5 to check their answers

Stage 6 Production (10-13 minutes) • to provide free practice

-T creates a real life atmosphere.. Ss think that they are in the 2nd week of school and want to know each other better. - T puts some pictures related to the verbs such as "study, earn, watch..." on the board and asks Ss to think at least 3 questions - T mingle Ss, they ask question and answer them regarding to Past Simple -T monitors and gives delayed feedback
