Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about the businessman and the fisherman in the context of the meaning of life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using the introduction of the text about the businessman and the fisherman in the context of the meaning of life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T introduces herself and asks them 'What do they do?'. Then, T projects a picture of a businessman and a fisherman and asks them "What do they do?" "What are the differences in their lives?"

Pre-Teaching Vocabulary (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T tries to elicit the words "fishing village, tuna fish, advice, bored, take siesta". T asks some CCQs to check if they get the target words, writes them on the board and shows the stress of the words. Please check the materials.

While-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with specific information reading tasks

T tells Ss they are going to read the introduction of the story and answer some questions related to it. T gives handouts to the Ss. While they are on the task T monitors. Then T wants them to check their answers in pairs. Later, T nominates Ss to check the answers.

While-Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening task.

T writes the question "Who has the best life?" on the board and tells Ss they are going to listen to the story of the fisherman and the businessman once. Then, T wants them to discuss their ideas in pairs and nominates some of the Ss to share their ideas.

While-Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T tells the Ss they are going to listen to the audio again to do the true-false exercise. First, T gives the handouts and wants Ss to read the sentences. Then, she plays the audio. As they listen T monitors. If they have difficulty in understanding, T plays the audio again. Then, Ss check their answers in pairs. To give feedback, T projects the answer key on the smartboard.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and the audio and expand on what they've learned

First, T explains the meaning of 'moral' as 'lesson of the story' and 'what really matters' as 'what is really important'. Then, she asks the moral of Pinocchio to check if they have understood. Then, T divides the Ss into two groups. T explains the first group is going to discuss the first question and the second group is going to decide what the moral of the story is. As they discuss, T monitors and take some notes to give delayed feedback. If time allows, T wants Ss to discuss if they agree with the statements, monitors and gives feedback.
