Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about the bystander effect in the context of helping people

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and get Ss familiar with target vocabulary

Project four scenarios on board and ask Ss if they would help or not. Why? -You are on a train and there is only one more passanger on the wagon. She falls down and hits her head on the floor. -You are on Istiklal on a busy day. There are thousands of people walking down the street and you see a man lying on the ground. - You are driving on E-5 and you see someone asking for help because he has had a flat tire. -It’s 11pm and you are on the campus. It’s dark and there is nobody around. Suddenly, you witness a student get bitten by a dog. Get answers from a couple of students for each question.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a video clip

Play the video on the bystander effect Ask Ss the following questions What does bystander mean? Why did take for some of them longer to help? What is the bystander effect? Elicit answers from a few students

Reading for the gist (10-15 minutes) • To make students understand the gist of the text

Tell Ss to read the text ''A Question on Numbers'' and do true/false questions( activity D) on pg 136 Ss check their answers with each other. Get the answers by nominating a few students

Reading for detail (8-10 minutes) • To make students make inferences about the text

Draw Ss attention to practice G Ask Ss to read the first question and give Ss a minute and then get the answer. Tell students to focus on some words and their connection to help Ss answer the rest of the questions easily. Question 1: complex - difficult to understand Question 2: was shocked by the news the next day - news traveled quickly Question 3: had to prove - would not believe without proof Question 4: only 31 percent tried to help - more people didn't help Question 5: a number of everyday situation - high number of everyday situations Question 6: one of many factors - not the only factor

Production (8-10 minutes) • To make students write a short summary of the reading text

Pair up Ss Project the prompts on the board to help students start writing - At 3 am in the morning in New York, someone... - According to the scientists,... Ask Ss to retell the story of Catherine Genovese
