Description

In this lesson, the students will listen to an audio deadline. First , they will talk about deadlines and read an email about deadlines. Then, they will work on the relevant vocabulary. Afterwards, they will do the tasks of the listening part. After that, they will learn the structures of making suggestions and they will focus on that for the rest of the tasks.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson the Sts will have practiced the receptive skill of listening by listening to conversation of deadline

Subsidiary Aims

  • The Sts will have learned vocabulary that is relevant to the topic of deadlines. They will also work on their speaking skills by working with their pairs or groups.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T writes deadline on the board and puts pictures that are related to deadlines on the board(task 1) -T asks Sts " What comes up to your mind when you hear the word deadline?" , "Do you ever have deadlines at work/school?What for?" and "Do you or your colleagues/ classmates ever have problems meeting deadlines? Why?" .First the T makes use of personalization by answering the questions . Then the T gives hadouts which have the questions on. Afterwards T tells the Sts to work in groups to discuss these points. (task 1)

Pre-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-Give Sts the email about deadlines. Then tells Sts " Read the email about deadlines and find what work the deadline is for."(task 2) Then, T and Sts discuss what the deadline is for. -Tell Ss "Five definitions are listed in this exercise. First read those definitions the find the words or phrases that could be matched with the given definitions." When the Sts are finished give them the anwer key to check their answers. (task 3)

While-Listening #1 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-Ask Ss "Who wrote the email?" and "Who received the email?" (Task 4) -Tell the Ss that they will listen to a conversation between Valerie and Jay" and tell them "Pay attention to who says what."Then tell Ss "There are four questions that are listed in this exercise. As you listen you have to put V for the ones that Valerie said and J for the ones that Jay said."After they listen tell Ss "Compare your answers with your partner." In the end give the answer key to them. (Task 4) -"Ask Ss "Do you think Jay's suggestion was a good one? Why? Why not?" "What makes you think that it is a good one?"(Task 5) -Tell Ss " Try to remember the conversation we just listened and fill the blanks accordingly." . Afterwards play the audio again and tell Ss "Fill the blanks as you listen to the audio (Task 6) -Choose a Ss who will read Valerie's parts and another Ss who will read Jay's parts. Afterwards tell Ss to read it aloud. (Task 6)

While-Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

OPTIONAL PART -Tell Ss "You will work with your partners. Read the conversationin task 6 and underline five expressions for making suggestions." (Task 7) -Tell Ss" Work with your partner and fill the blanks by putting the correct form of the words in the bracket." (Task 8) -Tell Ss "You will be working with your partners. Six different suggestions are listed here. Please read them and find what these suggestions mean. Use the spoken expressions in task 8." (Task 9) -Tell Ss" People do not always say exactly what they are thinking when they are being polite.You will be working with your partners. First look at this exercise and read what Valerie thinks. Then go back to task 6 and find what Valerie actually says. Then, match it with what Valerie thinks."(Task 10) -Tell Ss " Think about rejecting and accepting ideas politely in Turkish. " Write what Ss say on the board. Then ask Ss "Do you think it is important to be polite all the time? Why?"(Task 11)

Post-Listening (4-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-Tell Ss "You are going to discuss these four problems in groups and suggest solutions." And then ask one person from each group to present their solutions to one of the problems.(Task 12)
