In this lesson, students will study relative clauses in the context of modern icons and they will practice the relative clauses with a writing exercise.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet the students. Show the picture of Steve Jobs and ask "who is he?" Elicit answers. Then show the other pictures and ask students what's the relation between the pictures and Steve Jobs.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss read the paragraphs and check if their ideas are true or wrong.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss fill the gaps of the sentences through the paragraphs. PC/WCFB

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Inform ss why we use relative clauses. Use ppt and show examples. Ask ss to fill the gaps about the relative pronouns. Show them do's and don'ts. Deal with any issues.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Tell ss to fill the gaps with the relative pronouns. Pair Check. WCFB.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students read the text about Mark Zuckerberg and re-write the text with extra information as relative clauses. Monitor and help where needed. PC. Handout the answer key. Deal with any issues.

Free Practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Tell students to think about a very important person for them (mother, father, teacher etc.) Tell them to write a sentence about them using the relative clauses. PC, WCFB
