Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide students with practice in reading for gist, details and guessing meaning from context in the context of local environment problems.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with practice in speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start the lesson connecting to the previous one. Ask students where they live (in which area of Karabük). Ask them if they have any problems in that area.

Pre-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show them some pictures of the possible problems in an area. (taken from Google images) Put the problems on the board. (New Language Leader Upper Intermediate Coursebook pg.17 ex.5) Nominate one of the students to come to the board and match one of the pictures with a problem. Tell that student choose one of the student to do the second one and it goes on like that. Tell them work in pairs and discuss which one are the worst and rank them 1-9. (1=worst, 9=least worst) in two minutes. Ask about their opinions and elicit the reasons.

While-Reading #1 (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist

Ask students to read the text quickly and find out what the text is about.

While-Reading #2 (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Give the questions to students. (New Language Leader Upper Intermediate pg. 17 ex.6) Ask them to read the questions. Do some clarification with the questions; for example, in the first question you will be looking for a number. Give them 5 minutes to read the text and answer the questions. Ask them to check their answers with their partners. Do plenary feedback and ask for justification from the text.

Vocabulary Work (10-11 minutes) • To practice guessing meaning from context

Give the instruction of the matching activity. (New Language Leader Upper Intermediate pg. 17 ex.7a - edited) Distribute the material. Do the first one as an example to show what contextual clues would help them. Give them 4 minutes to match the meanings from the text. Ask them to check their answers in pairs. Do plenary feedback. Elicit the key words / strategies they used to find the correct answer. Give the instruction of the the other matching activity. (Match the highlighted phrases with functions.) (New Language Leader Upper Intermediate pg. 17 ex.7b) Distribute the material. Tell them the strategies they need while they are doing the task. Let them do the task individually in 3 minutes. Ask them to check their answers in pairs. Do plenary feedback.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Put students in small groups. Ask them to compare their areas with the one in the article and to find the similarities and differences between them. Elicit suggestions from different groups. Make error correction on the board.
