lead-in, pre-while-post reading of a reading text about the man behind KFC

Description

In this lesson, students will deal with a reading text about the creation of KFC. First they will do a quiz about identifying fast food companies and they will talk about different fast food companies through some questions. Then they will study some vocabulary by matching the words/ phrases with pictures. Later they will try to guess the story by looking at some prompts and will read the text quickly to check if their guesses are correct. Next, they will read the text to do ordering the vents exercise and comprehension questions. Finally, they will make a fast food interview with a friend and will give advice about their diet according to the result of the interview.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show the fast food logos on ppt and ask Ss "Do you know these logos?", "Can you tell me their names?" Ss tell the brands which they know. Ask the questions in the first exercise and get answers from individuals.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Give the hand-out and ask Ss to match the words or phrases with the pictures with their partners. Ss compare their matching with another pair. Get the answers from pairs and give feedback. Write "secret recipe" on the board and elicit the meaning of "secret" with a ccq asking "If something is secret, do lots of people know it? (no)" Write "develop a secret recipe" on the board and elicit the meaning of "develop" in this context. (create) Drill the pronunciation of the words and phrases in the HO and on the board. Ss,in pairs, try to guess the story of KFC's creator by looking at the prompts in the HO. Get the predictions of Ss.

While-Reading #1 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Ask Ss to read the text quickly to see if their predictions are correct. Ask pairs whose predictions are similar and get answers

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, ordering reading task

Ask Ss to read the text again, this time not quickly and do the ordering task in the book. Ss compare their orders with a friend when they finish. Tell them the correct order

While-Reading #3 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, comprehension reading task

Ask Ss to read the comprehension questions in the book. Elicit what type of information is needed in each question.(How should your first answer begin?--> with "because", What kind of a word do we need for the second question? a place?-->time, What kind of a word do we need for the third question?-->time/year, Do we need a word or a number for the 4th question?--> number, Do we neet to write an event or a number for the 5th question?-->event, What kind of a word should you write for the last question? a place, a time or a name?--> name) Ss answer the questions in pairs and compare with another pair when they finish. Get answers from different pairs

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand and speak on what they've learned

Give fast food interview HO and ask Ss to ask these questions to their partners Ss ask the questions and they comment on their diets and/or give advice to their friends about their diets Teacher monitors
