Description

In this session, Ss will learn about "phrasal verbs". When to use them and How to formulate them. Students will try to extract the phrasal verbs and their meanings from context.

Main Aims

  • Grammar: To provide clarification of Phrasal verbs and how to identify and use them in a meaningful manner.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Reading: Ss will read a text about "Adventures in traveling" and will answers questions for gist and for details.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask the Ss about a any situation that happened to them while they were travelling ad how it was resolved.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ask Ss to read the provided text "Adventures in travelling" and ask them comprehension questions.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Explain what a phrasal verb is. Ask them to highlight the phrasal verbs in the text. Write a list of the elicited phrasal verbs on the board.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Discussion: Ask if anyone knows the meaning for the phrasal verbs in the list. Provide them with what they don't know.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Divide students into groups. Give each group a verb that can be used in a phrasal verb form. Ask each group to use the verb in 3 different forms in complete coherent sentences.

Semi-Controlled Practice • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice
Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ask the Ss to provide Synonyms for the phrasal verbs in the text and replace them.
