Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of passive voice in the context of newspapers articles
  • To provide gist and scan reading in the context extreme living cities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about new stories in a newspaper in the context of newspapers articles

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows ss a picture of some newspapers and magazines and asks them to answer a question. Time 5 minutes Do you like reading newspapers and magazines? why?

pre-teaching vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • to teach the Ss some of the problematic words in the text.

T presents new vocabulary. (horrified, threaten,persuade,firefighter,recognize) SS are asked to match the word with the meaning. 5 minutes check in pairs drill T presents answer key.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Chest the headlines an articles T asks ss to read and match the story and headline in 3 minutes. CCQs: Are you going to read all the details? Are you going to match? How long ? check in pairs. T monitors T presents feed back.

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T asks students to look at 2 sentences written on the whiteboard. (mum cooks lunch), (lunch is cooked) T asks them a question. what is the difference between these sentences ?

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the passive voice

T writes on the board two sentences in the passive form and asks some CCQs. ( A woman was rescued from a burning house , a town has been built, a teenager is horrified) T asks ss some CCQs Is there a subject? Is there a doer? Is the doer important? I the doer unknown? Do we understand the sentence? Do we focus on the doer or the action? T clarifies form of passive voice in present simple, past simple, present perfect simple. form: object + be form(am ,is, are in present simple - was,were in past simple - been in present perfect simple) + past participle of the main verb T drills the weak form of the auxiliary + past participle

Controlled Practice (5-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T writes some sentences in the active form and asks Ss to answer then check in pairs. Answer key presented

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T asks Ss to write 5 sentences in the passive voice about a picture Check in pairs. T monitors and presents feedback
