Main Aims

  • To provide practice of The Past Simple & The Past Continuous. Its form, meaning and use in the context of News/Story
  • To refresh understanding of Past Simple

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a to describe an event from past

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Divide Ss in two groups A and B 2. T will call one person from group A 3. He/She would act and students in group B have to guess. 4. Ss will say stop after guessing the action first 5. They will tell the name of the action by using the phrase mentioned on the IWB: 'When i shouted stop you were....' 6. Ss will be instructed if they will not use the word 'Stop' after guess the other team will score the point. ICQs: 1. What will we say after we guess the action? When i shouted you were..... 2. What happens if you don't say stop?

Concept Check (9-10 minutes) • To assist students understand the concept of Past Continous and Past Simple on a timeline

T will use some examples and create timelines Sentence: It rained yesterday CCQ: 1. Is is raining today? 2. How do you know? When I shouted stop you were drinking water CCQ 1. Did this happen now? 2. What was he doing? 3. Was he drinking water before you shouted stop? 4. Did he drink water after you shouted stop? Amal was driving around looking for Dubai Mall, she took a wrong turn and lost her way CCQ 1. Was she driving after she lost her way? 2. Did she lost the way as soon as she started driving? T will show students underlined verbs in the sentences. T asks if these describe something temporary or in progress

While-Reading #1 (7-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

In groups of 4 T asks Ss to read news stories which was given in the previous lessons and find out more examples of past continuous T does one news story W-C

While-Reading #2 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

T will set the task by asking students to complete the sentences with the past simple or Past continuous form of verbs from brackets. t demonstrates one examples ICQ: Which words will you change? one in the brackets Once they are done they check their answers in groups and then WC FB

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T asks students to read the story and complete it by putting verbs/verb phrases from the box in the correct place Students check answers in groups

Ss watch a video clip from Tom & Jerry and answer the 4 questions
