Description

In this lesson, students practice different reading skills based on a reading text about food around the world. The lesson starts with a discussion about the different types of food that comes from our country. This is followed by scan, skim, detailed reading exercises. The final stage will be a free writing activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Food around the world 1) Which food and drink comes from our country? Answer the questions as a whole-class activity. Which foreign food and drink is popular in our country? Answer the questions as a whole-class activity. 2) Where are these pictures from (which country)? Hand out the text sheet with the pictures and ask the students to work in pairs. 1 minute.

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Vocabulary. Herrings, sardines, course (of a meal), chopsticks, transport, environment, farm the land. Herring: Use a picture to introduce and elicit. Pronounce, drill, write on the board. What type of word is it? How many syllables? 2 Where is the stress? on e. CCQ: Do herrings live in the see? Are they lüfer? No Sardines: Same as herring. Stress on i Course: Same as above. 1 syllable, stress on o. CCQ: Is it about food? Yes. Is dinner a course? NO Chopsticks: Same as above. 2 syllables, stress on o. No ccq necessary. While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Gist reading: Read the article and write the question for each paragraph. Work alone. 3 minutes. I will write the questions on the board. Check with a partner. Go over the answers. ICQ: Will you read every word? NO. Are you going to read quickly or slowly? Quickly. Scanning: Read the text and underline the vocabulary. Work alone. 3 minutes. ICQ: Will you read quickly?Yes The vocabulary will be on the board. These will be the introduced vocabulary and will be in the same order as they appear in the text. Check the answers with your partner. Any questions?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (17-25 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Detailed reading. We are going to play Jeopardy/Riziko/Büyük Risk. If they don't know what the game is about, I will show them a very short video on my phone and explain the rules. Each question is worth 100 or 200 points. The First person to raise their hand will have a chance to answer the question. If they get it right they get 100/200 points. Students that were too slow to raise their hands still have a chance to earn 50/100 points if they knew the answer. The student with the most points wins the game. Any questions? Read the text carefully. WORK ALONE. You have 8 minutes. ICQ: Are you going to read every word? YES. Are you going to read slowly?YES After the reading session, I will move the tables closer to the board and ask them to write their names. I will post each question on the board while I play the Jeopardy theme song. Point system: Q1:200 points. Q2:200 points Q3: 100 points Q4:100 points Q5: 200 points. Post-Reading/Listening (8-13 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Write a paragraph about breakfast and dinner in Türkiye. Work alone. 8 minutes. How many courses for breakfast/dinner. What types of food? We live next to the sea. We eat a lot of fish and meat.. Do we eat vegetables? Do we use our hands or with a knife and fork? Discuss with your partner. 3 minutes.
