Main Aims

  • To provide ss with practice in reading for gist and detail and to practice deducing meaning of vocabulary from context through an article about popular culture.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students a practice for speaking by using the new vocabulary.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To get ss interested in the topic.

Put pictures of some famous paintings, sculptures on the board. Ask students if they know the artists. Try to elicit the numbers but if they don't, share the answers. Then ask ss their favorite artists and write the names on the board that share.

Pre-Reading 1 (4-7 minutes) • To get ss thinking about the reading.

Add the pictures of drawings of Banksy on the board, too. Ask students if they know what are these pictures called. Ask students look at the pictures on page 94 and then ask them read the instruction of ex1. Tell them to work with pairs and decide which of the pictures are art for them. Elicit answers from the students.

While-Reading 1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging task, reading for a gist.

Tell students to read the text quickly, (set time as 1-2mnts) and match one of the pictures with the text. Ss read the text individually then do a pair check before whole class feedback. Ask students how they found the answer. Elicit a few answers from students.

While-Reading 2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging tasks

Students will read the text again, but slowly. Then they will individually complete ex.2b, and decide if sentences are true or false. Then ss will check their answers with their pairs. During the WC/FB, I'll ask students how they decided if the answers are true or false. Ss must read the part that they found the answer. If they can't find the correct answer ss will read the related part of the task again. If time allows, after checking all the answers, i will tell students to read 3rd sentence of the example and tell them let me show you what happens when people buy his paintings, then I will play the video about how Banksy destroyed his own painting after it was sold for $1.36m.

While - Reading 3 (10-14 minutes) • To clarify meaning by deducing it from the text.

Tell ss to read the instructions and ask them what to do. In order to show how to deduce the meaning from the text, first question will be done with students.Ss will work with their pairs. Do WC/FB. To be sure that ss understand the meaning ask CCQs after some of the words.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To allow ss to respond to the text and give their opinions

Ss will be groups in 3 or 4 according to the total student number. They'll read the instructions and then I'll give them an example how to share their opinions (I think Banky’s paintings are ..... because .....) While they discuss the questions for 5-6 minutes. I'll will monitor and try to write down the good examples and bad examples they use. Then I'll give a general FB.
