Procedure

Project PPT Slide 2. Who's that in the picture? What are the differences between the photos? What tense do we use to describe the 'today' photo? What about the '1980s' one? Project PPT Slides 3-9 quickly. Tell Ss each pair will receive a H/O with one of the PPTs and they must discuss the then and now situation. Student A can describe the then photo and Student B can describe the now photo. You will discuss your photos for two minutes? ICQ - What do I want you to do? Who describes the 'then' photo? How long do I want you to discuss it for? Give out H/Os. Monitor the activity. Get FB from one or two pairs.

Exposure (8-9 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text 'Life Without Money'.

Project the 'Life Without Money' picture of Mark Boyle. Tell Ss they will read about this man in a few minutes. Ask Ss to guess why the article may be interesting. As they read it, Ss should underline all tenses about the past. They have 6 minutes to read the article. ICQs What's the man's name? What do you need to underline as you read it? How long have you got? Give H/Os and monitor to make sure Ss are underling past tense forms. Tell Ss to compare with their partner. Project it again and ask for the gist of what the text was about? Ask random Ss to come forward and underline past tense forms. Project highlighted words. Draw Ss attention to 'would' and 'used to' 'got used' etc.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice
