Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with clarification, review and practice of be going to in the context of plans

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency


Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To get Ss interested in the topic

Show pictures of Olivia, Matthew and Lily and ask Can you remember their plans? Elicit answers from some Ss.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To encourage Ss to notice the TL

Focus on the instructions and give Ss time to complete the gaps with the correct form of be going to. Ss peer-check their answers. Then play the audio for Ss to check their answers.

Clarification (10-13 minutes) • To focus Ss on MFP of the TL

Pay Ss’ attention to sentences from ex a. Ask CCQs: I’m going to teach English to young children. Did she teach in the past? (no) Is she teaching now? (no) Does she want to teach English to young children? (yes) When did she decide to teach: now or before? (before) It’s winter in Australia now, so it’s going to be quite cold. Is it usually cold in winter? (yes) Is it winter in Australia now? (yes) Is it possible that it’s cold in Australia? (yes) How do we know? (because it’s winter there now) Timelines: Ask Ss to choose which timeline is suitable for plans and predictions. In pairs, Ss focus on whether sentences 1-5 in ex a are plans (PL) or predictions (PR). Ss check against answer keys on w/b. W/c FB. Form: Ss look at the sentences in ex a and complete the table with the correct forms. Ss peer-check. W/c FB – show Ss answer keys on the w/b. Pronunciation: Focus on the Fast speech: gonna box and go through it with the class. Model and drill chorally and individually.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To check Ss’ understanding of meaning & form

Focus on the instructions. Give Ss the HOs. Ss complete the dialogues with the correct form of be+going to and a verb from the list. Ss peer-check and then check against the answer keys.

Semi-Controlled Practice & Freer Practice (10-15 minutes) • To further consolidate the TL and allow for some production

Focus on the instructions and elicit the words missing from the question prompts (are and going to). Put Ss in pairs A and B. A asks B his/her questions. Then B asks A his/her questions. Monitor and note down any errors. When Ss have finished, get FB from some pairs. Do some delayed error correction. Optional – if time Give out the HO. Ss read the adverts and deal with any vocabulary problems that come up. Focus on ex a. Ss read the four questions and individually make their choices. Focus on ex b. Demonstrate the activity. Choose a holiday and options. Ask Ss Where are you going to go? until you find someone who has chosen the same destination as you. Then ask When are you going to go? etc., to try to find someone who has chosen the same options. Ss do the same, first with the student next to them, then by standing up and moving around the class. If Ss quickly find somebody with the exactly the same holiday details, tell them to find as many other people as they can. Get some FB. Ask Who found a partner? Which was the most popular holiday?
