  • To practice reading for gist and detail through the context of an article about emigration from Britain.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To learn about selected vocabulary from the reading text.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students on the context of moving abroad.

Project PPT Slide 2 and elicit names for various countries that are signposted. Tell Ss they are going to discuss 3 advantages and 3 disadvantages of living in a particular country. They will work in pairs and have 3 minutes to discuss the country. They should use questions that show interest or keep the conversation going. They should also use vocab they learned in the previous lesson. Place the students in pairs and tell them to pick a mystery country off the wall. ICQs - What are you going to be discussing? (3 advantages and 3 disadvantages of living in another country) How long have you got to discuss your country? (3 minutes) Monitor the activity and write up interesting vocab on the w/b. Ask Ss for their fb. Ask Ss about which country is the best to move to.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Project the pictures for page 28, 4a. Tell Ss they will do a speaking activity. They will work in pairs to discuss three photographs. (Show them). Tell Ss they have three minutes to discuss the photos. Give out Moving to Another Country HO. Monitor the Ss. Write errors on board. Focus Ss on projected photographs again and get some suggestions from each pair. Show PPT Slide 3 Tell Ss they are going to do a placement exercise. Each pair will receive a word(s) and there are six in all. They must decide what it matches with. 1 minute Give out words. Elicit name for these kind of pairs or groupings of words which is 'Collocations'. Ask Ss for some more example. Project PPT Slide 4. Instruct Ss there will be a group activity with 3 teams. Each team gets 2 or 3 words that should be matched to definition. ICQ activity. FB on activity. Project PPT Slide 5. Elicit Form. Drill Pronunciation.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Tell Ss they will do a discussion exercise. Ss must do Give out Moving to Another Country HO 1B. - 2 minutes Class FB Instruct Ss to read article on Side 2 of Moving to Another Country HO. - 5 minutes. Instruct Ss to check their answers with p/w. Feedback. Any questions on challenging vocabulary?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Instruct Ss to read article again and match the summaries (a-g) with the paragraphs (1-4). There are three extra summaries. ICQ instructions. Monitor from a distance. Project HO on the w/b and elicit answers. Feedback of Ss thoughts on British people. Ask them do Turkish people come home after a couple of years as well?

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Instruct Ss that he will project questions on the w/b and SA asks the question B answers. After 2 minutes a new question goes up and SB asks and SB answers. Show PPT Slides 7-11. Pick two voluteers to model the first question. Project next slide Monitor the pw. If there is an odd number the we will create a three-person group.

Delayed Correction (2-3 minutes) • To highlight speaking errors from the previous stage speaking task.

T writes up errors on the board. Ss critique the errors.
