Main Aims

  • To provide practice of classroom vocabulary in the context of teacher commands

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of vocabulary from the story

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet each student specifically and by name. Say, "Hello _________. How are you today?" Prompt or model the conversation for them with teacher assistant. "I am fine thank you." Take plenty of time with this as the students have not been exposed to this particular conversation.

Exposure (15-20 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Task (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Pg. 14 Part B - Have each student read the story in Kurdish. Then read the story in English several times. The story should be read progressively faster each time the teacher reads it. Have the students write the story in English. Make sure to emphasize writing on the lines and punctuation.

Exposure (15-20 minutes) • To provide exposure to new vocabulary

Pg. 15 Part C - Model this with the teacher assistant. Practice with each student and then have the students practice with each other. Have them alternate speaking Part A and Part B. P6. 15 Part C - Review specific vocabulary. Make sure to emphasize the words intended to command. Make sure the students are not pressured into forceful speaking but model it for them in a humorous way.

Task (10-15 minutes) • To allow students to practice the vocabulary they have been exposed to

Pg. 16 Part 2 - Have the students listen to you read and circle the words that they hear. Pg. 16 Part 3 - Have the students listen to you read and fill in the blanks of the word when they hear it.

Review (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language
