Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice in the context of description of Ss' favourite photos

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed information in the context of a favourite photo blog
  • To provide practice of TL (past continuous) in the context of favourite photo

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To get Ss interested in the topic

Focus on the questions. Get Ss to discuss the questions in pairs. Encourage them to give more information if they can. Get FB from a few pairs.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with a model for their writing through reading

Focus on the information at the top of the image and establish that this is for a photo competition on the internet. Ss discuss the photo and decide why it is the writer’s favourite. Write some of Ss’ predictions on the w/b. Then Ss read quickly and check. Make sure Ss put their pens down and read without filling in the gaps. Get w/c FB. Focus on ex a. Ss read the text again and match the questions with paragraphs 1-5. Ss peer-check in groups. Get w/c FB.

Useful Language (4-5 minutes) • To highlight useful language or features of organisation of the text for coming productive task

Focus on ex b. Ss complete the gaps with in, of, on, or round. Ss peer-check in pairs. Call one of the early finishers to come to the w/b and write the answers. W/c FB. Encourage Ss to notice the organisation of the description according to the questions.

Productive Task(s) (15-18 minutes) • To give Ss practice in the target productive skill

Put Ss in pairs/small groups to discuss the pictures and take notes of their answers to the questions in ex a. Ss choose one photo on their phones. Ss work collaboratively for this with one per group working as secretary and doing the writing. Give Ss paper to write on.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-7 minutes) • To provide Ss feedback on production and use of language

Ss put their finished writings on the w/b with their pictures. Ss read each other’s and decide whose is the best description. If time, do some delayed error correction - either Ss swap papers and correct each other's errors, or make notes of some common errors and put them on the w/b.
