Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of present continuous in the context of noisy neighbours

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of spotting the differences in two pictures

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T writes on the board the questions: "What time do you sleep at night? Can you sleep as soon as you go to bed? Does it take you time to go to sleep?" Ss discuss in pairs/small groups. Feedback.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss look at the picture of the flats (in pairs/small groups) and discuss why the couple in flat 5 can’t sleep. Ss listen and check their answers. Peer-check and W/C feedback. Then Ss read through the dialogue and try to complete it before listening. Then they listen and check their answers.

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To highlight the target language so learners are focused on it.

The attention of the Ss is attracted to the question `Do we use present continuous to talk about now or every day. They try to work out the meaning with some guidance.

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss learn about meaning and form of present continuous with guided discovery. Timeline is also used for highlighting. Ss are involved in clarifying the form on the board. Pronunciation and contractions are drilled.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss work together on the controlled practice activity. An answer key can be used for feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss play a miming game using gestures, movements but without speaking to guess the actions.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss tell each other what’s happening in their flats. They look at the pictures and tell if it’s same or different in their picture. They circle the differences. After monitoring errors are on W/B and elicit corrections from Ss.
