Main Aims

  • • To provide Ss practice in speaking for fluency and accuracy in a conversation about their last holidays.

Subsidiary Aims

  • • To provide Ss practice in necessary vocabulary and grammar they need for the main aim.


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To get Ss interested in the topic.

Show the pictures. (your bad and good holiday) Act puzzled. Elicit: my last holiday. Based on the pictures, Ss guess why the person in the picture had a good/bad holiday.

Exposure (7-9 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through a reading.

Tell Ss to look at the picture: What are they talking about? Elicit some ideas. Tell Ss to place their pens down, no writing. Ss read for the first time to check if their ideas were right or not. Feedback. (Ruth's holiday) Fill the first gap as an example. Ss fill the rest of the gaps in groups. Hand them the answer sheet.

Useful Language (7-9 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Ask Ss: Where did Ruth stay? (an apartment) Did she buy it? (no) Elicit rent and its difference with hire. Show the pictures. 'Which one did you do on your last holiday?' Elicit phrases related to the pictures to review the difficult ones. Complete the first verb phrase of ex 2 on page 152. Ss complete the verb phrases in pairs. Feedback. Elicit some answers but don't give them assurance yet. Ss listen to the audio to check their answers. Have enough modelling and drilling of the verb phrases.

Productive Task(s) (15-17 minutes) • To provide Ss an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Point to one of the pictures. Ask: What questions can we ask? (Where did you go? Who did you go with?) Show ex 6b. What words do you need to complete these questions? did- you- was Do the first one/two with Ss. Ss Write the rest of questions in pairs. Feedback. (Whole Class) Say: I went to China. (Pause to get Ss reaction) The first day was terrible. (Pause to get Ss reaction) Tell Ss that in our speaking, we use some phrases to show interest and to continue the conversation. Elicit phrases from the useful language. Put the words and phrases from useful language on the board. Model and Drill. Ss stand up, talk to as many Ss as they can. Ss ask the questions from the Speaking and show interest. Monitor and write some good language and errors.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide Ss feedback on production and language.

Write the good language and the language that needs corrections on the board. Ss find the good language and correct the errors. Feedback.
