Description

The Ss practise listening for specific information & detail, and the tasks are a bit different each time for the 3 listening tracks. The listening also provides the source for the target language (TL) in the following lesson.

Materials

Abc Work and Play (3B)

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with practise in listening for specific information and detail in a quiz show in the context of people’s jobs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review and practice the lexical set of jobs

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • to get Ss interested in the topic of jobs and work.

Find some job/work-related pictures to introduce the topic and elicit vocab from the context.

Pre-Listening - Vocabulary Review (8-10 minutes) • to check Ss’ vocabulary knowledge on the topic.

Ss complete the letter ordering activity (ex1a). Tell Ss the first letter of the anagram has been used. Peer-check. Feedback Use topic related vocab in a personalised way (ex1c). Elicit and drill the question: “What do you do?” Help Ss to understand the weak pronunciation of ‘do’ as an auxiliary verb and the strong form of ‘do’ as a main verb. Practise this question in a chain drill around the class. (Ss ask and answer each other the question round the room.)

Pre-Listening (3-5 minutes) • to prepare Ss for the listening.

Tell Ss they're going to listen to a game show called His job, her job (write the title caption on the board) where there are 3 contestants. 3 contestants (David, Kate, Lorna) ask questions to Wayne for 2 min and have to guess his job and his wife Tanya's job. Introduce the idea of the game show that is presented in the listening, maybe with some pictures to help set the context (game show host and a male and female contestant).

While-Listening 1 (8-10 minutes) • to provide Ss with the opportunity to extract specific info.

T gives out H/O with questions of ex 2a. T goes through them and elicits/teaches any new words, e.g. outside/inside, at night, long hours, qualifications etc. T tells Ss that they must focus only on which questions the contestants ask Wayne about his job. Tell Ss that they should write a W (for Wayne) next to the questions the contestants asked him. T gives out the entire script of 2 10. Play audio 2 10 once the whole way through. Play the audio again, if necessary. Ss write W next to the questions. Peer-check. Feedback. Repeat the same procedure for audio 2 11. This time Ss focus on questions asked to Wayne about his wife Tanya. Ss write T (for Tanya) next to the questions they hear.

While-Listening 2 (8-10 minutes) • to provide Ss with the opportunity to extract specific info.

T tells Ss that now they have to focus on what Wayne answers. Elicit that he can only answer yes (tick), no (X) , or it depends (D). Explain/elicit the meaning of it depends. and drill pronunciation. T plays the audio 10 and SS do the task ex 2b. Peer-check. Feedback. Repeat the procedure for audio 11.

While-Listening 3 (8-10 minutes) • to provide Ss with the opportunity to extract specifc info (ex2d).

T tells Ss to think focus on the questions and answers. T gives them one min to guess Wayne's and Tanya's job. Get feedback. T plays the end of the show (2 12) . T pauses after they ask Are you a footballer? and asks Ss what they think, before letting them hear his job. The continues the audio unit Is that right, Wayne? and asks what they think, before letting them hear Tanya's job. T ssk Ss with a show of hands who had guessed correctly each job.

Speaking (Flexi-stage) (3-5 minutes) • to practise oral fluency

If time - Ss use the prompts from the listening to talk about their own jobs in pairs.
