Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with practice in reading for gist, specific information and detail, and to practise deducing meaning through the context of a holiday that went wrong.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency
  • To consolidate and give Ss practice of holiday vocabulary

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To get Ss interested in the topic.

Welcome Ss. Give white sticky labels to everyone and ask them to write their names with capital letters on the sticky labels. Ss will then stick them on their shirts. Focus on the instructions and the examples. Highlight that the verbs are in the –ing form because they are things you like doing. Ss write five things, then they compare their list with a partner. Elicit some of the verb phrases Ss have used and write them on the w/b, e.g. swimming, going to restaurants, seeing new places, etc. Tell Ss to decide which activity on the w/b is their favourite and take a vote with a show of hands.

Pre-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To get Ss thinking about the reading

In pairs, Ss interview each other using the holiday questionnaire. Remind them to always ask for extra information. Get some FB from various pairs. Focus on the title of the lesson and the photos, and ask Ss what they think the title mean (that somebody went to a nice place, but didn’t enjoy it because of the person they were with).

While-Reading #1 (3-5 minutes) • To provide Ss with less challenging gist reading task

Put Ss in groups, A and B. Focus on the text. Tell all the As to read about Joe and the Bs about Laura. Set the task before Ss read – Did Joe/Laura have a perfect holiday? Set a short time limit, then get Ss to peer-check in their group. Monitor and give the Ss the answer within their group.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • Reading for specific information and detail

Ss read again and find the answers to questions 1-5 and underline them in the text. Set a time limit for Ss to read their part. Ss peer-check their answers within their group. Monitor to check they have the right answers. Give answer keys if necessary. Then regroup the Ss into pairs – A & B – so they can tell each other about the text they read, using the answers to questions 1-5 to help them remember the important details.

While-Reading #3 (5-7 minutes) • Deducing meaning of vocabulary from context

Get Ss to swap their texts and to read the text they didn’t read earlier. In pairs, Ss look at the highlighted words/phrases in the texts and match with the correct definitions. Monitor and help where needed. Call one of the early finishers to come to the w/b and write the answers. W/c FB. Answers: 1 f, 2 e, 3 h, 4 b, 5 g, 6 a, 7 d, 8 c Do the question as an open-class activity.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To allow Ss to respond to the text

In pairs/small groups, get Ss to discuss the question. W/c FB – find out if any Ss have ever been on holiday ‘in the right place, but with the wrong person’. If time – do some delayed error correction on w/b from errors noted.
