Description

In this lesson students will practice future tense. We will highlight the slight difference between future tense and present continues tense. The context is Tourism. Students will have to talk about their future holiday plans as well as how to improve the tourism in their own town(Istanbul). In this lesson, I will give the difference in meaning, then the form(structures of future tense and present continues tense) and lastly, I will drill on pronunciation(Esp. "Gonna" form). Assuming that Ss already know about future tense, this class will mostly be held with learner-centered practice activities.

Main Aims

  • To introduce & give practice in using "going to" and the present continuous to talk about the future.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking about the future using "going to" and the present continuous.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher asks students some general questions about their lives and sees if they have any plans about life/school/family/holidays, and elicits “ going to “ then, asks them which tense is it? Teacher brings more examples from the reading text from the Rumeysa's class. Ss discuss the examples with their pairs. Teacher gets Ss thoughts on the future and continues tense. Then Draws timelines on the board to make things more clear.

Exposure to Grammar Point (4-6 minutes) • To give them the grammar point that will help them in the following exercises.

Teacher distributes the grammar box. So that Ss can see how future tense is formed. #Teacher notes. I am going to go to the cinema. Is not usual. Better to say. I am going to the cinema. #Teacher also introduces "gonna" in this part.

Rearranging the words in sentences (6-9 minutes) • Clarifying

Teacher pairs Ss up. Gives instructions.Then, the teacher distributes the rearrangement activity. And sees how Ss do. While they are still doing the activity, the teacher asks some of them to write their answers on the WB. It will help to kinesthetic learners.

Speaking (6-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Teacher writes a Language tip on the board: *I’m not sure. *I haven’t decided yet. *It depends. Afterwards, the Teacher asks Ss to produce sentences relevant to these.About their holiday plans. Ss are to use the questions from the previous activity.

Speaking 2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice their speaking skills on the TL

Teacher puts Ss in groups of 3 and tells them that nowadays. They have to imagine that they have the power to do anything they like in Istanbul to improve the tourism. They have to discuss in their groups. And write down at least six ideas.

Speaking 3 (7-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice their speaking skills in TL

Students work in pairs. They asks each other questions from explain yourself worksheet to practice future and present continuous tense. This activity is from the photocopiable pages of the course book. There is the beginning of the sentence, Ss have to think of proper endings.
