Description

In this lesson, Sts learn about using Present Perfect + for/since based on a reading about phobia. The lesson starts with matching pictures,then a listening about a kind of phobia. Grammar is in the context of reading and there will be some controlled practice by making sentences and a freer practice both with using grammar and vocabulary.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Present Perfect +for and since in the context of reading and listening about phobias

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for grammar in the context of using new vocabulary about phobias

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-the teacher asks students to look at the pictures on page 76 and do exercise 1a in pairs and groups. -whilst the students agree on the answers in pairs,the teacher write the answers on the board. -the teacher asks students to check their final answers with the board.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-the teacher ask students to go to the listening part and asks them to cover exercise b in order to read just exercise a. -the teacher plays the track and at the end of the track the teacher asks sts to answer the question based on what they heard. -the teacher asks sts to take their hands away and read the exercise b.the teacher plays the track one more and asks sts to answer them. -the teacher hands out papers about different phobias and their original names. -the teacher reads the word, afterwards the teacher asks sts about their fears.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-the teacher asks sts to read the reading and fill the gaps and find four words related to phobias. -sts do the reading for themselves and check their answers with their partner. meanwhile, the teacher write a sample sentence on the board. -the teacher checks the answers and explain the word 'panic' for sts.

Clarification (8-13 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-the teacher draws attention to the sentence on the board and two other sentences in the reading which each reading starts with. -the teacher do CCQs about the tense of the verb. -then the teacher draws a timeline on the board and tries to explain the usage of 'for' and 'since'. -the teacher asks sts to do the grammar part and check the answers later on. -the teacher plays the pronunciations for sts and asks them to put the words in the right columns. -then the teacher plays the stress track and practice it with finger techniques.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-in this part teacher asks sts to write questions and answers from speaking part in grammar form. -the teacher makes pairs and groups and let the sts to asks their questions in pairs. -later the pairs ask their questions out loud and their partner should answer and they change roles.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-the teacher have some words in small papers on the table.the words are about fears. -the teacher gives time to sts to take a look at phobias with original names. -each sts come and pick one. -then the st should explain the fear by using the grammar form and things they can't do if they have the phobia. -the other sts should guess the name of the phobia. -each group guesses correctly is the winner.
