Description

In this lesson, Ss read about three people's opinion about shopping for gist and details. Because they do reading in three groups and each group reads about a different person, they share their ideas with the other groups afterward. Then they discuss some questions in the same context which can be considered as a fluency speaking.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Do you live to shop or shop to live in the context of Shopping

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate in the context of shopping

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set context of the importance of clothes and engage students

Ss are asked "Do you like buying clothes?" and "How often do you buy clothes?". A w/c FB is taken. Then the question "Are clothes important in Turkey?" is asked. A w/c class FB is again taken.

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the reading passage

The question "Are clothes important for the other countries, for example, in the US or UK?". After a w/c FB, the Ss are told that they are going to read and find about the importance of clothes for three people from UK, the US, and Australia. Three photos of three people will be put on the w/b.

While-Reading (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with gist reading tasks

The Ss are put in three groups and are told each group is going to match its passage with one of the photos on the w/b. The reading HO's for each group are given out. a Three-minute time limit is set. Ss read the passage individually and then share ideas with group members to match their passage with one of the photos. A w/c FB is taken while at the same time each group give its reason why they have chosen a person.

While-Reading-2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with detailed reading tasks

The Ss are told they are going to answer some questions about the same passage in the same groups. Three different HO's with questions are given out to each group. A time limit of 5 minutes is set. The Ss start reading and sharing their ideas with their partners. After all three groups answer the questions, a secretary from each group is sent to the other group with his or her questions. The members of other group ask the questions the secretary is having. Then the secretaries are sent to the second group and the same procedure will be repeated. When the Ss are done with the Q & A, the secretaries go back to their group. The member of each group tell secretaries' what they have heard about the other two stories. Finally, a w/c FB is taken.

Post-Reading- speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to practice fluency speaking

The Ss are told they are going to discuss some questions in pairs. One or two questions are directly asked from Ss as model. Then the question HO's are given out. A w/c class FB is taken.
