Description

This is the first part of a two part lesson. The learners will be introduced to the topic of survival and consider lexis related to surviving in extreme conditions. Then they read two texts about extreme sports.

Main Aims

  • To provide an opportunity to develop reading for gist and specific detail. The learners will also be asked to discuss the content of the reading and see some of the target lexis in context.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of adjectives describing people in the context of text about surviving in extreme conditions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show 4 photos of extreme conditions: desert, mountain, jungle, river rafting. Ask learners to write words for each picture. Sts match a description to a photo and then write their own description for the other pictures.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Sts listen to the tape and number the situations in teh order they hear them. (2a) Sts match the phrases with the situations. Drill the phrases and mark stress. Practice: Milling activity - sts stand up and ask questions to practice the target lexis.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

On w/b: extreme sports. Elicit examples from sts. Sts discuss in pairs. Sts look at photos and predict the goal. Sts read quickly to check their response.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Sts do the T/F activity and check in pairs. 1;F, 2:F, 3:T, 4:F, 5;F, 6:T, 7:T, 8:T Answer key (under chairs).

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Discussion. Mingle: sts ask questions to each other. Feedback to a new partner.
