Wish Clause - Demo Lesson
A2 Adult level

Description

The aim of this lesson is to teach the use of Wish Clause with would and past participle forms. After the warmer about regrets, wish clause will be introduced; the meaning and the form will be clarified. Necessary parts will be highlighted. With a semi controlled practices, Ss will be checked (and if needed corrected). As free practice Ss will be set in pairs and translate a song on Wish Clause. Ss will be given a HW to write a small paragraph about their regretsor wishes.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T goes in the class, introduces herself and asks Ss about their names and occupations. Then T writes "REGRET" to the whiteboard and asks the meaning of the word. If the class doesn't know the meaning T explains it through example. T then asks Ss what they say in Turkish for their regrets and elicit the word "keşke". With the word "keşke" T introduces Wish Clause.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shows a picture of Alaaddin's Genie and asks Ss what would their wishes be. T writes Ss' sentences to the WB and presents them with the form: S + wish + S + would + V1 Then T corrects Ss senteces acorrding to the form. T then clarifies the meaning: anger, regret, eagerness, complaint. T introduces the second form of Wish Clause form: S + wish + S + past participle T explains the meaning: the wishes about the present and future. T asks Ss to form sentences and corrects them on the WB.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T highlights the form: I wish I were… T also clarifies the difference about positive and negative forms as wish and hope. T explains about "if only" If only S + past participle.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T gives HO1 and observes Ss to fill in the blanks. T helps if needed. Answers controled with whole class.

Semi-Controlled Practice 2 (3-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T gives HO1 and observes Ss to fill in the blanks. T helps if needed. Answers controled with whole class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T introduces Nina Simon's I wish I knew how it would feel to be free. T hands out the lyrics and wants Ss to follow the lyrics. Then T wants Ss to work in pairs and translate the song to L1. At the end of the lesson T asks Ss to write a paragraph about their regrets or wishes for the next lesson as HW.
