Description

In this lesson, students will speak of making arrangements and learn the correct intonation to show interest.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of language used for "showing interest with the correct intonation" in the context of "making arrangements"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency in the context of "making arrangements"
  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about phone call in the context of "making arrangements"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

After checking home task I will briefly highlight the difference between "have got/has got" and "have/has". Review of frequency adverbs. Students will ask questions in pairs to each other starting with "How often..".

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will complete the task 1A from Speakout elementary. They will match time expressions with the correct examples. Then they will practice these time expressions in their speech.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students will listen to a phone call and find true/false sentences. Then they will compare the two listeners in the audio. "Which was a good listener and why?". They will also underline the phrases that show the interest of the listener.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

They will listen to the audio and repeat the sentences with the correct intonation. By this, I will clarify the correct intonation and make them repeat.

Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will complete the phrases filling gaps and then spell the phrases. Students will also identify the negative, positive and neutral phrases. They should also use their mimics.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will listen to the audio and respond with the correct phrase.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will write 3 or 5 sentences and read them to their partners. Based on the meaning of the sentence the partner will respond using the correct intonation.
