Description

In this lesson, Ss will explore the organization, content, and language of a basic film review, resulting in the S production of a film review of their favorite movie. The Lead-In of the lesson will ask Ss about their favorite films, following up with a paragraph organization task of a model film review. After Feedback, Ss will identify the important information in each paragraph and complete a handout on language clarification in pairs. Ss will then work individually, brainstorming the main components of their film review and then write a 30-40 word product. Ss will then read a classmate's review and give their reactions to the film in the open class.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Ss remind T of their favorite film. - Tell Ss: Today, we'll look at film reviews.

Focus on Layout and Organization (5-7 minutes) • To expose Ss to the layout and organization of a fim review

- Distribute HO1, Paragraph Cut-outs to each pair. - Ss put the film review cut-outs in the correct order for 2 minutes. - Instruct Ss to arrange ordered film review into four paragraphs. - Ss paragraph the film review in the same pairs for one minute. - Pull up correct paragraphed film review on the projector for student-centered FB. - Ss compare and make necessary corrections.

Focus on Content (5-7 minutes) • To expose Ss to the content of film reviews

- Ss talk in pairs about what information is in each paragraph (for example, character, plot, etc.) for 2 minutes. - Run WC FB using projector to highlight the content of the film review. Elicit S responses.

Focus on Language (7-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive task

- Ss complete HO2, Language in pairs. - Post answer keys on the walls. Monitor for problems with the language. - Ss check answers on answer keys for correct answers. - Review CCQs and Extension for necessary language. - Drill Pronunciation.

Brainstorming (5-7 minutes) • To scaffold ideas for productive task

- Distribute HO3, Brainstorming. - Monitor closely and help feed Ss necessary language.

Writing Task (9-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

- Ss use their brainstorming notes to write 30-40 word film reviews. - Distribute HO4, Lined Paper. - Monitor Ss and help feed any necessary language.

Feedback (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

- Shuffle S papers and distribute them to Ss. - Ss read a fim review from a classmate. - Ss respond whether they would like watch the film described in the review.
