Making Speculation about hte past

In this lesson the students will have the chance to use the grammar that they have learnt in the previous lesson

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for making speculations in the context of mysteries of lost worlds

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of mysteries of lost worlds

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will bring a cake to class of which I wil cut off before one corner and ask the students who might have eaten that missing part.Then I will lead in the topic with writing the names of the ancient places on w/b and will ask questions about it. Ss have to make speculations about the missing part of the cake and later about the ancient places.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

I will give the Ss a Gap-fill-in HO that they have to do on their own. Then they have to compare their answers with their patners. Meanwhile I will put the answers on board and Ss have to come to the w/b to check their answers.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I will devide the class in four groups (if there are enough Ss) and will give each group a different HO with pictures and some information about mysterious places. Each group has to make their own speculations about the place they have on their sheets.Ss have to make their guesses about the pictures with using the target language and have to make a consensus. Then each group has to share their result with the class.

Productive Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will hang on w/b pictures of Göbekli Tepe and will ask the Ss to come to the board. They have to make their guesses about the pictures. I will lead them in some parts with asking them wh-questions. Then the Ss have to make their own guesses about the pictures in groups. I will let them do this task in pyramid structure (begin with pairwork then groups of four and so on). At the end the class has to agree on their speculation about the pictures.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Ss have to give feedback of their speculations with using the target language. At the end I will give them the information about the pictures.

Productive Task • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

If time I will ask the Ss to think that their partners won from the lottery a big amount of money and spent it all. Each student has to make guesses with using the target language what their partner might have done with the money. The guesses have to be acceptable for the partner.
