Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about People in the context of How am I like my family? Who is Lionel Messi? Forming friendships

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Collocations with get and adjectives describing physical appearance in the context of family and friends.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-12 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher draws his family tree on the board and writes down some sentences about each member of the family using adjectives. Then, the teacher asks the students to do the same. After that, the teacher nominates some students to read out their own sentences.

Pre-Reading (12-18 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher tries to elicit some of the vocabulary that the students might need while reading. The teacher gives the context/meaning of each word, and when any students finds the word, the teacher writes it down on the board. Then, the teacher asks some CCQs about each word to make sure if the students understand or not. After that, he asks the students about the part of speech of the word. The teacher models and drills the word.

While-Reading (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

The teacher shows the students which text they are going to read, then highlights the first task (skimming for gist). After that, the teacher tells the students to read the text silently and individually and gives them a time limit (2 minutes). After the students finish reading, the teacher puts them in pairs to check the answers with each other. Finally, the teacher gives a whole class feedback.

While-Reading (20-25 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

The teacher tells the students that they are going to read the text one more time, a little more closely (the teacher gives them a sufficient time) to try to find the answers of the following exercise (which is more challenging and includes scanning for details). After the students finish reading, the teacher puts them in groups to discuss their answers. The teacher monitors the students while they are trying to find the answers and offers help if necessary and also takes some notes for the whole class feedback.

Post-Reading (12-17 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher divides the class into two groups (Group A and B).The teacher tells them that each group should describe a celebrity and the other group should guess which celebrity he/she is. The group which will be able to guess the person correctly within one minute gets a point. At the end of the activity, the teacher announces the winner and might also give feedback about the students' usage of the target language while performing the activity (adjectives)
