Main Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about thoughts on first date in the context of a TV show

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice about a first date in the context of a TV show


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss a picture of Esra Erol who is famous for matchmaking. Ask Ss if they know about her show and they like it or not.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Elicit the words from the pictures.

While-Reading #1 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Get Ss into groups of A and B. Show Ss the questions in ex8a on PPT. Elicit the meaning of the first questions. Show Ss pictures of Susie and Jo. Ask "What does Susie do?" and show Ss how to list their answers. Get Ss to find the answers in assigned texts. Get Ss to share their answer with their group by asking the questions. Get Ss into pairs. Tell Ss to ask each other about the text using the same questions and share their answers. Ask Ss to write their answers on the board.

While-Reading #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Divide the class into groups of 3. Tell Ss to choose the perfect match for Mark and list their reasons on the WB. Give Ss time to decide and discuss with their group. Get Ss to vote.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask Ss to read about Mark's thoughts on the first date with the woman the class chose. Get Ss to discuss these questions in pairs. - Does Mark like her? Why not? - Does she like Mark? Why/Why not? - Do they want to see each other again?
