Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with practice in listening for gist, specific information and detail in the context of weekend free time activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of free time activities in the context of an office party

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Get Ss to ask about their last evening in pairs. Ask some of them to share with the class. Tell Ss what you did last evening.

Pre-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Get Ss to look at ex3B on p133. Do the first one with a student. Ask Ss to do the rest individually. Peer-check before whole class check. Drill some phrases, e.g. concert, go for a drink, coffee.

While-Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Have Ss discuss the questions in ex2 on p26 in pairs and take some general FB. Record some of the answers on the board. Get Ss to listen to check their ideas. Peer-check before whole class feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Give Ss time to read through the T/F statements in ex3a. Get Ss to listen again. Peer-check before whole class feedback. Get Ss to read through task in pairs in ex3b. Get Ss to listen and peer-check.

Post-Listening (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Elicit Yes/No questions and short answers for free time activities. - Do you ... (e.g. go to concerts)? - Yes, I do / No, I don't. Ask Ss to ask for details e.g. When? How? Which movie/singer/mall? Tell Ss they are going to find a classmate who does the activity and write their name. Choose some students and ask "Does ... go to concerts? Give delayed feedback after monitoring.
